We just came across the question online, if you should either let a watch you won't be wearing for a while work, or let it come to a standstill. Opinions are divided.
When the lubricants are in good condition, it doesn't really matter. In that case, no extra wear will occur if you keep the watch running.
In case of complex calibers or automatic watches, a slowly rotating 'watch winder' is a good solution.

We've also tried to use the little machine to get our Halloween pumpkin running again, but that wasn't the brightest of ideas. The pumpkin is now spinning out of control...
